He & She

The Chinese New Year Eve, one of the most important days for all Chinese around the world. The day where all family members would go back home to have their reunion dinner, no matter how far and how busy they are.

It is a day where family ties are being renewed and strengthened.

I have not seen my Ye Ye (term for grandpa) for a very long time. I only get to see him around three times a year. The Chinese New Year Eve, the first day of Chinese New Year and his brithday.

I have always been curious on how my grandparents met each other. So on this day, I decided to ask him at the dinner table...

'Ye Ye...'

'Yea?'

'I wanted to ask you something for a long time, but I don't know will you answer me...'

'What do you want to ask? If I know the answer, I will definitely give you the answer! There's no reason for me not to answer you when you ask me something.'

'Ye Ye, I just want to know, how did you know Nai Nai?' (Term for Grandma)

Ye Ye put down his chopsticks and study my face.

'Why do you want to know? No one has asked me about this question before.'

'Cos I know how Papa and Mama met and get married, and that's how Sai Low (Cantonese Term for little Brother) and I appear. So I also want to know how you and Nai Nai met and how Lou Dao (Cantonese Term for Father) and Sok Sok (Cantonese Term for Uncle, Father's younger brother) appear! Lou Dao always say he don't know. He told me to ask you myself!'

Ye Ye burst out laughing. He looked at my dad and my dad just gave him a hearty smile back in return.

Ye Ye turn his attention back to me and said...

'Its gonna be a long story. It might be boring too. And since it might be boring, do you still want to hear it?

'Of course! Its not everyday that Ye Ye will tell me a story! Ye Ye, I want to hear your story!'

'Since you said so, then I will tell you my story... A story that your Lou Dao and Sok Sok has never heard before...'

'Yea! Ye Ye, you are the greatest!

'Hahahaha! I will tell you the story after dinner! The dishes are getting cold. Once we are done with the dinner, I will tell you the story...'
